The IUCN 2016 World Conservation Congress adopted a Resolution entitled Safeguarding space for nature and securing our future: developing a post 2020 strategy. In it, IUCN invites Parties to the CBD to initiate the process to develop an ambitious post-2020 strategy and calls for the definition of science-based targets. Among others, it also calls for widespread consultations with all sectors, and calls on the Director General of IUCN to promote and support the development of this new 2020 strategy.
IUCN's views on the preparation, scope and content of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework
As part of its engagement in the process, IUCN submitted inputs for the preparation, scope and content of the Post-2020 Strategic Plan in response to a notification issued by the CBD secretariat.
Contribution to the design of a long-term strategic framework for capacity building beyond 2020
As part of a UN Environment project entitled “Environmental Treaties Programme – realizing synergies for biodiversity” supported by the European Union and the Government of Switzerland, in September 2018, IUCN conducted a survey among its Members to gather views on capacity building needs for coherent implementation of the biodiversity-related conventions (BRCs) and assess the interlinkages between capacity building activities leading to enhanced cooperation and collaboration between these conventions. The results of the survey are presented in a paper that constitutes a contribution to the preparation of a long-term strategic framework for capacity building beyond 2020, as mandated by CBD COP Decision XIII/23.
Space for nature symposium
The Zoological Society of London (IUCN Member), National Geographic Society, IUCN, WCPA and other partners organized in 2018 a symposium entitled Safeguarding space for nature and securing our future: developing a post-2020 strategy where scientists, conservation practitioners, policymakers, businesses and civil society discussed the science informing the area-based conservation targets, evaluated different policy options, and provided recommendations to the CBD Parties.
