IUCN / CEC Newsletter November 2010 Issue 40

Dear CEC members,

The theme of this newsletter is ‘communicating biodiversity’. This term has 11 syllables and 20 targets: that's the number of targets in the new Strategic Plan agreed by governments at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10). The plan urges action to save and restore nature. Our plan will be to help people care about, even love, nature – which is the first step to understanding, action and change. You can see the CEC presentation at Nagoya, watch the great new video and read Yvonne Otieno’s first-hand account. Enjoy the variety of news stories shared here by CEC members around the world who are ‘communicating biodiversity’ in so many creative ways.

I would like to extend congratulations to three young CEC members. Ms. Grace Mwaura of Kenya, IUCN Councillor, has won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. Ms. Esther Agbarakwe,  CEC National Activator for Nigeria, is a winner in LEAP Africa’s Nigerian Youth Leadership Awards. Mr. Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu is a recipient in the Rolex Awards for Enterprise Young Laureates Programme.

As 2010 comes to a close, we look back at a year rich with experience ‘communicating biodiversity’ and consider climate change, anticipating reports from CEC members attending the UNFCCC in Mexico this week.

With best regards,
Keith Wheeler, CEC Chair
